Find out who we think will win Russia 2018, who will cause an upset and who will underachieve plus our views on England.
Who will win it?
Spain. Iniestia, Koke, Asensio, Isco, the list is endless. The midfield quality in the squad is staggering. So much so that they deemed Cesc Fabregas and Marcos Alonso surplus to requirements.
How will England fare?
In Gareth Southgate, England have found a tactician who isn’t afraid to rip up the rulebook and try something new. Competition for places is high, we have a talisman in Harry Kane and a dynamic new system in place. England are playing with confidence and dare I say it even a swagger. Inevitably Quarter-Final misery beckons.
Best English performer?
Kyle Walker. The move to Manchester City seems to have done his career the world of good and is playing some of his best football at the moment. The prospect of Walker bringing the ball out of defence at pace is exciting.
Star player prediction
David de Gea’s time to shine is here. He doesn’t make many mistakes, so he’ll certainly bounce back strong after last night’s performance against Portugal. His class will shine through in the latter stages of the competition.
Which side is your dark horse?
Denmark. Christian Eriksen holds the key. For this ever-improving Danish side to cause a surprise the Spurs dynamo needs to be on the ball. (pun-intended) Unbeaten in 11 since a back-to-back loss in qualifying against Poland and Montenegro at the back end of 2016.
Which of the big Nations will underachieve?
Germany. The World Champions have looked unconvincing in the warm up games, with a loss to Austria and a scare against Saudi Arabi. The return of Manuel Neuer could be an interesting situation, the German shot-stopper has been out for the whole season and lacks match sharpness. Could a slip-up be on the cards? We shall wait to find out…
